Pet Postcards and Exciting News

Friday, September 27th, 2013

This week I finished my 3 pet postcards to send off to Houston IQA for the Pet Postcard Project, so I am cross posting this to Nina Marie’s Off The Wall Friday. These will be for sale at Festival for $20.00 each. Last year if I remember correctly they earned about $20,000.00 for a no kill shelter in Houston and should surpass that this year. I hope lots of people will participate for this worthy cause.

These cards were super easy as all I did was to machine quilt the printed fabric and bind them, but i think they came out good.

I got word this morning that my entry to the LaConner Quilt Museum show in WA., “Foxglove Fairy” has won an award! They won’t say what til after the Award Ceremony, so we’ll just have to wait and see!

Exciting news on the teaching horizon as well – I have a five day retreat workshop scheduled for 2015 at the Hudson River Valley Art Workshops in New York!! I’m looking forward to this new direction in my workshops as I will be doing one this coming February at Empty Spools in CA., as well! If you would like to learn to design and piece your own original work of art, just choose your coast and join me!

Eagles Soar Finished

Saturday, September 14th, 2013

“Eagles Soar” , 22 x 32″ is finished! Normally I work on a piece start to finish before starting another, but for some reason this one got set aside, probably because it’s deadline was not until late September! I finished the quilting on Thursday, blocked it and then did the binding on Friday. This will be one of my entries for “Inspirations” this year.

I’ve said it before, quilting skies is hard for me. I think it is because I have a tendency to quilt heavily which seems counter intuitive, skies being so airy and light, it’s hard to keep that look with heavy quilting.

For his piece, I decided to give a nod to traditional quilting patterns by using a lot of feather designs to compliment the unusual sky treatment. I used two different varigated threads in the sky, a darker one in shades of blue and a lighter one that had a lot of yellow with some pink and blue. I am happy with how it turned out!

For some time I have wanted to participate in NinaMarie’s “Off The Wall Friday” and today is the day for me to give it a try. Clicking on the above link should take to a page where you can see LOTS of wonderful works! Enjoy!!

Colorado Coneflowers Class

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

In July, I traveled to Colorado to do a guild program and workshop on Picture Piecing the Coneflowers pattern. This morning I received the first finished project photo from participant Sharon Signorelli!

I love it when I get photos and permission to show them!! Sharon did a great job. I especially liked how she varied the colors of the flowers and she got really nice contrast against the background with both her flowers, stem and leaf.

Thanks, Sharon!

SOLD! SAQA Auction Quilt

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

The SAQA Benefit Auction started yesterday and my Northern Cardinal sold right away raising $750.00 for SAQA! Not bad for a little 12 x 12″ piece!!

There are still lots of wonderful works available and the price drops daily. Check it out!

Quilting The Eagles

Sunday, September 8th, 2013

Yesterday I finished the quilting on the eagles and now I need to start the sky; skies are my least favorite thing to machine quilt! So I put it off for tomorrow. Today..

Usually I don’t do puzzles in the summertime, but this year August was pretty much an unusual month and we have done several! This one was different! A sunflower in the shape of a sunflower so that it needed to be worked from the center out.

There are a few “shapes” in the pieces that really helped, but still, this was a hard one. Currently working one of buttons, all shapes and colors which makes it easier than it sounds.

Eagles Soar

Thursday, September 5th, 2013

Yesterday when I posted, I scrolled back to see when I had finished the Eagle top, and discovered that I never had posted it!  So here it is:

You can see the original photo “Eagle Soars”, by Tammy Patterson. I did a mirror image as well as using the original orientation just to add complexity to the layout. I worked on it for awhile yesterday and hope to do some more quilting today.

The Topeka Public Library has posted very nice photos of the Material Conversations exhibit. If you cannot make it to the actual exhibit this is the next best thing!

Labor Day

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

The dog observed Labor Day correctly – chilling out on the sofa in the studio while I worked.

Yes, I finally got busy and prepped and pinned the Eagles top and started the quilting. It feels good to be sewing again!
