Working and Changing

Monday, August 25th, 2014

I’ve been working on the Yorkie and finished the first half.

YorkieHalf

Not at all happy with the squiggly blue on white background but I have a shortage of nice lights. I’ll have to dig a little deeper!

YorkieFace

While working on the face, I found this one in the stash that has the right colors; it will work much better, so I redid the first half.

IQF Houston, Silent Auction

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

It is an honor to be invited to participate in the Silent Auction at the Quilt Festival in Houston and I usually try to send something, especially when I have something showing there…..This year I will have two things at the show, one in “Raining Cats and Dogs” and one in “World of Beauty”. I like to have my Silent Auction piece reflect my entry, so this year I am doing a dog.

YorkieBW

I like to make my photo in black and white as it is easier to see through the tracing paper that I use to do the layout. I generally ad hints and clues that will help later on, like the direction of the fur and the darkness of the eyes and nose.

YorkieLayout

After finishing the layout last week I spent some time transferring everything to the freezer paper and marking the tic marks to aid in the sewing,  pulling fabrics that might work and did some cutting in preparation for the sewing. It’s good to be working again!

Last Week

Monday, August 18th, 2014

Last week the weather was glorious, 70’s – low 80’s, low humidity, just perfect! I took advantage and spent the afternoons out on the deck doing the hand work to finish the latest work of art. Here’s the view!

I decided that it needed a faced edge so I finished that and also the hanging sleeve. I think bindings are faster and easier than facings, but for this one, it was worth it!

facingAfter I finished the hand sewing I was not ready to go inside, so I paged through the two latest SAQA Portfolios sequentially, comparing the works of the different artists.  If they had work in both volumes, it was fun to really look and note the similarities and the differences in each one’s work and the many styles of working amongst all of the artists.

portfolios

I noticed that in Portfolio 19 the page headings throughout the book said Portfolio 18!

Busy Week

Saturday, August 9th, 2014

It’s been a theatrical kind of week; I have seen the Topeka Civic Theater’s musical, “Mary Poppins” and the Auburn Community Theater’s “Old Time Radio Show” — both good! Also had an evening out for dinner and meeting of my small quilting group which is always fun! So, it has been a busy week.

On the quilting front, yesterday I prepared and applied the facing strips to the newest wall hanging. That still needs the hand work to finish it, then the hanging sleeve and documentation, but the end is in sight.

I have been invited to participate in the Silent Auction at the Houston Quilt Festival so that must be my next focus as it has to be there by mid September!

Dog Update

Thursday, August 7th, 2014

The stray dog is settling in and relaxing enough to play.  He found a plastic Folger’s container that I had been using to collect Blister Beetles in and had such a good time tossing and chasing it til he got bored and decided to chew on the garden hose instead.  I only had to open the door and step outside for him to walk away.  I guess he will teach me not to leave things laying around!

Dog with Kong

Since he appears to be a youngster who needs to chew we got him a Kong and put peanut butter inside to keep him occupied. He LOVES it.  This picture was taken from inside through the screen, so looks a bit fuzzy.
