Houston Winners

In lieu of the pictures that I didn’t get this year, I offer this link to the winners at Houston. While you cannot fault the workmanship on the judge’s choices, I felt that there was a definite slant to the traditional this year and I was not interested in looking at most of them. I had nothing in the contest this year, my entry, Longhorn Splashdown would have been in Art Quilts – Pictorial had it been juried in.  The quilt that won second in that category was one of my favorites, but most of my favorites were not prize winners, so are not shown.

Friday evening was the opening reception for the “Inspirations” exhibit at The Classic Bean in Topeka.  I arrived home at 3:45 from Texas, changed clothes and after a short visit was gone again to be there by 5.  My piece, “Colorado Kids” looked great! This is the exhibit that is a collaboration between photographers and artists, mostly paintings, but there were some digital manipulations of photographs as well as one other quilted piece on display. A nice exhibit to see if you are in the area. I will try to get photos later.

I have made some headway on getting things put away, but I think it will be a while before I am free to start sewing again!

Ruth, I love your work and feel sad that your recent QA post indicates you are discouraged that representational work seems passe. You are still suffering from the sting of Longhorn not being accepted at Houston–should have been IMO! I usually quickly identify your work but do not accuse you of imitating “the other quilter.” Your work is inspiring–often causing a “how does she do that?!” reaction. I hope you will keep producing your masterpieces with no concern for what shows they get into.

Thanks Martha. Of course, I’ll keep at it, I can’t seem to stop, the high points generally outnumber the lows!
