Growing Stuff
This is the third year I have re-bloomed this Amaryllis and it gets better every time!
I just went out to photograph my new Lenten Rose, Helleborus “White Lady” which was in full bloom, but something has bitten them all off along with some of the leaves. I’ll have to do some research and see what likes them. Deer? Packrats? Gardening in KS is certainly a challenge.

Bunnies love to nip my bleeding hearts when they are about 3″ tall. It only took two years to wipe all of the plants out. Your amaryllis is beautiful!! My Mother-n-l gives me one every Christmas. I wait and put it in the flower bed when it’s warm enough and dig it in the fall. Looking forward to June!!

The deer eat my roses (AND stems, yikes!) every year. I don’t even get to see the blooms anymore…I’ve given up. On ANOTHER note, I opened up my Quilting Arts magazine and there you were! How exciting to see “you” in full color and in one of my favorite magazines. I kept wanting to see that deer quilt up close. You use so many pieces. How do you decide how you want to break an object up…say the deer’s head. I noticed in the photo of your initial drawing that everything already had all its little bits and pieces decided…how do you DO that?

Hi Vicki- I haven’t gotten my issue of QA yet so was glad to hear that it is out. Click on “fawn” in the side bar to see some posts and pics on the making of the fawn quilt. Basically I make a drawing first and then use a vellum overlay(very transparent tracing paper)to divide the picture into sewable sections. If you think that picture piecing is something you might like to pursue check out “Coneflowers” and “Poppy!”in my Patterns section in the website. It’s a fun and easy way to see if you enjoy the process.
