Signs of Spring
KS is known for unusual weather so 74 degrees in March is not totally unexpected, but it is certainly welcome! After my walk yesterday it seemed just too nice to go inside so I spent some time weeding the perennial beds. If only the good stuff would grow as well as the weeds! So far only the daffodils and tulips are beginning to poke through. I surprised a 4 foot long blacksnake sunning himself by the rock wall and he expressed his displeasure by shaking his tail at me like a rattlesnake would.

I don’t think there are anything but rattlesnakes in SCalifornia – they are the only ones I have ever seen here. But if I saw a four foot long snake anywhere or any color I would be the one who was surprised, not the snake. Every now and then I think of the snake I ran over driving to your house. I looked in the rearview mirror and he just moseyed on across the road, being run over didn’t seem to bother him a bit. You have sturdy snakes in Kansa… along with the sturdy people.

Well I was glad to see him since I am not afraid of snakes, I am counting on him to clean out the mice that also live in that wall and chew holes in the water garden pool liner and the lawn furniture! The water snakes that eat the fish are NOT so welcome…

I always ask myself that question, too! Do weeds just want us to love them? I grow lots of things that my gardening friends deem weeds because I love them but those nasties that just go wild…
In No.CA we have rattlesnakes but fortunately I’ve never seen them in our neighborhood — I hope they want hotter and dryer. We have little black snakes with a red ring around their necks that are cool, and of course garter snakes.

We have those little ring neck snakes too, they’re kind of cute.
